Where do I like to eat when I hit Pass Road in Gulfport, Mississippi? Cajun’s Fabulous Fried Chicken of course! I flippin’ love that place. I first visited this buffet back in 2001 during my first trip to the United States and to this day, it is still one of my favourite restaurants.
Now please don’t judge me but I’m one of those “Buffet People”. I’m one of those folks who like to journey back and forth between buffet bar and table and try all sorts of things. I realize this habit is contributing to my weight issues, but such is life. This post isn’t about my cholesterol levels, it’s about fabulous fried chicken!
So why do I enjoy Cajun’s as much as I do? Well, I enjoy the selection. They have fried chicken (obviously), fried catfish, fried chicken livers and fried okra (are you starting to see a pattern here?) But other than fried stuff what else do they offer? Howza ’bout coleslaw, baked potato salad (imagine a potato salad with sour cream and bacon bits in it), mashed potatoes, gravy, corn on the cob and the list goes on and on. But the quickest and easiest way to describe it would be to call it “soul food.” For the uninitiated, Wikipedia is your friend.
But that’s not the only reason I love to eat there. It’s got that tradition factor to it. For years my wife and I have been going there. And it’s a tradition that dates way, way back.
The Cajun’s we eat at now isn’t the original one we ate at though. Originally we used to eat at Gulfport, MS’s Highway 90 restaurant. But in 2005, it closed it’s doors. Well, that’s not entirely accurate. The original Cajun’s was one of the many victims of the Gulf Coast’s Hurricane Katrina tragedy. It was basically destroyed and washed away into the sea, never to be seen again. But that was the case with pretty much every property on the sea front of Gulfport. But that’s a tale for another time.
Another anecdote: Which famous celebrity do you think we once saw in Cajun’s. You’re probably not going to believe this but it was actually Motley Crue’s Vince Neil! How weird is that? A superstar the magnitude of Vince Neil happened to be dining in when we decided to drop by one time. I’ve seen several famous people in person over the years, but the randomness of Vince Neil eating at a fried chicken buffet is definitely awesome in it’s randomness. What’s next? Michael Jackson and Elvis Presley hanging out in Dunkin’ Donuts?
